New York: Along the High Line
The "High Line" is an old elevated railway spur along the lower west side of Manhattan, which once carried food and supplies to New York's "meatpacking district." The last train ran in 1980 and the line sat derelict until community groups advocated for its restoration as a linear urban park. The first section, from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, opened in June 2009. I visited in September 2010.
